Practice Nurses

Our Practice Nurses are here to provide care for a range of health needs, including long-term conditions such as Asthma, COPD and Diabetes, or procedures such as contraception checks or ear syringing.

Our routine nurse appointments are available at both our Tramways and Middlewood sites and can be booked up to 4 weeks in advance. Please call our main Practice number on 0114 234 5338 during normal opening hours to book with our Reception team.

Depending on the procedure required, you may need a longer appointment. Please indicate to the Receptionist what you require the appointment for and they will be able to find a suitable time for you. An approximate length for each appointment is given below, although these may vary depending on each patient's need.

Our Practice Nursing team can offer the following services:

.

Asthma Reviews

Patients diagnosed with Asthma are invited for an annual check each year and you should receive a letter to remind you to book an appointment. Patients who are routinely prescribed inhalers by the GP are required to have at least one asthma review each year, to ensure it is safe to continue prescribing your medications. Without these checks, the GP may not be able to issue you further prescriptions, so we encourage patients to be aware when their review is due. These reviews usually take around 15 minutes.

.

Contraceptive Coil Checks

If you have a contraceptive coil fitted it is important to check the threats yourself every 4 weeks. If you are unable to locate the threads of your coil, please book a consultation with a Practice Nurse. We would advise you to use an additional method of contraception in the meantime.

.

Contraceptive Depo Injection

If you receive the contraceptive depo injection then you will need to attend the Practice every 11-12 weeks for you injection to be given. Please book a routine 15 minute appointment with one of our Practice Nurses. If you are overdue for your appointment, please make our Reception team aware.

.

Contraceptive Pill Checks

Patients who are prescribed the contraceptive pill will need a review at least once a year. Initially this may be more frequent if you are starting or swapping to a new pill. For you ongoing review, please book a routine 15 minute appointment with one of our Practice Nurses.

.

COPD Reviews

Patients diagnosed with COPD will be invited for an annual check each year and you should receive a reminder to book an appointment. This is a vital part of the management of this chronic disease. Without these checks, the GP may not be able to issue you further prescriptions, so we encourage patients to be aware when their review is due. These reviews usually take around 30 minutes.

.

Diabetic Reviews

Patients diagnosed with diabetes will be invited for an annual check each year and you should receive reminder to book an appointment. This check allows the nurse to help monitor your medication and carry out assessments of your condition. Without these checks, the GP may not be able to issue you further prescriptions, so we encourage patients to be aware when their review is due. You will first need an appointment for your bloods taking and your foot check with one of our Healthcare Assistants. This usually takes around 20 minutes. You should then book another follow-up appointment with one of the Practice Nurses to discuss your results. This can also be done as a telephone consultation.

.

Dressings

If you require dressing or wound check, please make a routine appointment with one of our Practice Nurses or our Nurse Associate. If you have previously been seen at the hospital, please bring your dressings and discharge letter along with you to the appointment.

.

Ear Syringing

Patients who are experiencing compacted ear wax can book routine consultation with a Practice Nurse to have this removed. It is important that patients ensure that they have softened the wax with oil drops for 7 days prior to the appointment. If the wax remains to hard then we may be unable to go ahead with the procedure. Patients must also make sure that the ear if clear of infection. If you are experiencing any discomfort or discharge from your ear then you may need to wait for this to resolve. If you have any concerns, please seek advice from your pharmacist or GP.

.

INR Checks

If you are on medication that thins your blood, such as Warfarin, you may be required to have regular blood tests to ensure you are being prescribed the right levels of medication. For this you may need to book an INR check with one of our nursing team, who will then also be able to advise you on the most appropriate medication schedule to manage you condition.
